Fixed ladders are specified differently from portable ladders. Key compliance requirements: rung spacing must not exceed 300mm centre-to-centre, clear width between stiles must be at least 400mm, and a safety cage is required above 3m in most industrial and commercial settings. For installations with more than 6m of continuous vertical climb, a rest platform is required under BS EN ISO 14122-4. If a cage isn’t feasible due to structural constraints, a BS EN 353-1 fall arrest rail system is an accepted alternative under the Work at Height Regulations — both options are available in this range.
